The Centre on Thursday, 26 February 2009, said it has decided to extend the Transport Subsidy Scheme, 1971 for the time being, till the evaluation of the scheme is complete. The scheme compensates the cost of transportation of raw material and finished goods by providing subsidy up to 90% of the cost incurred on such transportation. It is provided to 14 states/Union Territories (UTs) located in hilly, remote and inaccessible areas.

The Scheme has been very helpful all these years in facilitating the pace of industrialization in the beneficiary states/Union Territories with a large number of industries coming up in the regions resulting in substantial employment generation. The extension of the scheme is expected to boost further the industrialization in these beneficiary States/UTs, the government said in a release.
